Ingredients

Scale

Mozzarella & Breading

  • 8 slices fresh mozzarella
  • ½ cup flour
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup olive oil

Marinara Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the breading stations: Mix together the flour and garlic powder in one shallow dish. In another bowl, whisk the egg and milk until combined. Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third dish.
  2. Bread the mozzarella slices: Dip each mozzarella slice first into the flour mixture, coating evenly, then into the egg wash, and finally press into the panko breadcrumbs to ensure a thick, even coat.
  3. Freeze the breaded cheese: Lay the breaded mozzarella slices on a piece of parchment paper lined baking sheet. Place in the freezer and allow to chill to help the coating set and prevent melting during frying.
  4. Make the marinara sauce: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the tomato puree and bring to a simmer. Add salt, onion powder, black pepper, and red pepper flakes, then reduce heat to low and let simmer gently while cooking the mozzarella.
  5. Preheat the Blackstone griddle: Set the griddle to medium heat and let it warm up thoroughly to ensure even cooking.
  6. Cook the breaded mozzarella: Pour a generous amount of olive oil onto the griddle surface, being careful not to let it run into the grease trap. Place the frozen breaded mozzarella slices onto the oiled griddle. Cook until golden brown on one side, about 2-3 minutes, then carefully flip and brown the other side. Add more oil if needed to prevent sticking.
  7. Serve: Remove the fried mozzarella promptly from the griddle to avoid overcooking. Serve hot with the warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Freezing the breaded mozzarella before cooking helps maintain the cheese’s shape and prevents excessive melting.
  • You can use shredded mozzarella if fresh slices are not available, but slices provide better coverage.
  • Adjust the red pepper flakes in the marinara to control the level of spiciness.
  • Using panko breadcrumbs creates a crunchier texture than regular breadcrumbs.
  • This recipe is best served fresh and hot for optimal texture and taste.
