Ingredients

Scale

Butter Base

  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened

Flavorings

  • 1 tablespoon coarse Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a medium bowl, add the softened unsalted butter, coarse Dijon mustard, chopped chives, parsley, fresh thyme, minced garlic, lemon juice, paprika, kosher salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated into a smooth, spreadable butter mixture.
  2. Shape the Butter Log: For a traditional compound butter, scoop the cowboy butter mixture onto a piece of plastic wrap. Roll the butter into a tight log shape, pressing and shaping as you go to eliminate air pockets. Fully wrap the butter in the plastic wrap and twist the ends to secure. Refrigerate this log until firm, ideally for at least 2 hours or up to overnight.
  3. Use as a Butter Dip: Alternatively, to use the cowboy butter as a warm dipping sauce, place the mixture into a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 20-second increments, stirring between each, until completely melted and smooth.
  4. Storage: Store any unused cowboy butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will remain fresh and flavorful for up to 5 days. For longer storage, the butter log can be frozen and thawed as needed.

Notes

  • Use softened butter to ensure easier mixing and better incorporation of herbs and spices.
  • Feel free to adjust the cayenne and crushed red pepper flakes to suit your spice preference.
  • This compound butter pairs excellently with steaks, grilled chicken, seafood, roasted vegetables, and even warm bread.
  • For a smoother texture, you can process all ingredients in a food processor instead of mixing by hand.
  • Compound butter can be frozen for up to 3 months; thaw in the fridge before use.
