For the Dough
- 1 lb store-bought pizza dough (or homemade dough)
- Flour for dusting
For the Filling
- 1 lb ribeye or sirloin steak, thinly sliced
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For Assembly
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp water
- Marinara sauce (for dipping)
- Prep the Filling: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, green bell peppers, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Sauté the vegetables until they are caramelized, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove and set aside. In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sear the thinly sliced steak over high heat for 2 to 3 minutes, seasoning with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Once cooked, remove from heat.
- Roll Out the Dough: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly flour a surface and stretch the pizza dough into a 12 by 16-inch rectangle, ensuring even thickness.
- Layer the Goodness: Evenly sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheeses over the dough, leaving a one-inch border around the edges. Spread the cooked steak slices and the caramelized vegetable mixture evenly over the cheese layer.
- Roll It Up: Starting from the long edge of the dough, roll it tightly into a log shape, making sure to pinch the edges to seal the stromboli to prevent filling leakage during baking.
- Bake to Perfection: Place the rolled stromboli seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash, then brush this evenly over the dough. Cut 3 to 4 slits on top of the dough to allow steam to escape while baking. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.
- Rest & Slice: Let the stromboli cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Use ribeye for richer flavor or sirloin for a leaner option.
- Make sure to roll the dough tightly to avoid filling spilling out while baking.
- Slits on top allow steam to escape, preventing sogginess.
- For added spice, increase red pepper flakes as desired.
- Store leftovers wrapped tightly in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven for best results.
