This Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf combines the delicious flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich with a hearty meatloaf. Featuring ground beef mixed with seasonings and layered with sautéed peppers, onions, and provolone cheese, this dish offers a comforting and flavorful twist on traditional meatloaf.

Ingredients

Scale

Meatloaf:

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Cheesesteak Filling:

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (4 for filling, 4 for topping)

Optional Garnish:

  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to get it ready for baking the meatloaf.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced green bell pepper and onion, sautéing them for about 5 minutes until softened. Once done, set them aside to cool slightly.
  3. Prepare Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  4. Form Base Layer: Press half of the meat mixture evenly into the bottom of a loaf pan, creating a solid base for the filling.
  5. Add Filling: Layer 4 slices of provolone cheese evenly over the meat layer. Then, spread the sautéed peppers and onions on top of the cheese for that classic cheesesteak flavor.
  6. Seal Meatloaf: Top the filling with the remaining half of the meat mixture, pressing it firmly to seal the edges and enclose the filling completely.
  7. Bake: Place the loaf pan in the oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. About 5 minutes before the cooking time is complete, arrange the remaining 4 slices of provolone cheese on top of the meatloaf and return it to the oven to melt.
  8. Rest and Serve: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • If you prefer a different cheese, mozzarella or Swiss cheese can be good alternatives to provolone.
  • For a lower-fat version, use lean ground beef or a half beef and half turkey mix.
  • The meatloaf can be assembled a day in advance and refrigerated before baking to enhance the flavors.
  • Make sure not to overmix the meat mixture to keep the loaf tender.
  • Letting the meatloaf rest after baking helps it to hold together better when slicing.
