Ingredients

Scale

For the Mints

  • 1 can Sweetened Condensed Milk (approximately 14 oz)
  • ½ cup Unsalted Butter, softened
  • 4 cups Powdered Sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon Peppermint Extract
  • Food Coloring, drops as needed (optional for festive colors)

Instructions

  1. Mix Base Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, blend together 1 can of sweetened condensed milk and ½ cup of softened unsalted butter using a hand mixer or whisk until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  2. Add Powdered Sugar: Gradually sift in 4 cups of powdered sugar while continuing to mix on low speed until the mixture resembles a thick dough-like consistency.
  3. Flavor and Color: Stir in 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract and if desired, add a few drops of food coloring. Fold the mixture until the color and flavor are evenly distributed.
  4. Chill the Dough: If the dough feels too soft to handle, place it in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to firm up and become easier to shape.
  5. Shape the Mints: Take small portions of the chilled dough and roll them into balls about 1 inch in diameter or use cookie cutters to create festive shapes.
  6. Set the Mints: Allow the shaped mints to set at room temperature for about 1 hour so they firm up slightly without hardening.
  7. Store: Transfer the mints to an airtight container and store at room temperature for up to one week, keeping them fresh and soft.

Notes

  • Do not substitute sweetened condensed milk with powdered milk as it changes the texture significantly.
  • Unsalted butter is preferred to control salt content and flavor.
  • Sift the powdered sugar to avoid lumps in the dough.
  • Food coloring is optional but can add festive appeal for holidays.
  • If dough is too sticky, refrigerate; this improves handling and shaping.
  • Store the mints in an airtight container to maintain softness and prevent drying out.
