Dough
- 1 can Pillsbury Biscuit Dough
Boiling Bath
- 1/4 cup Baking Soda
- Water (enough to fill pot halfway)
Topping
- 1 Egg
- 1 tbsp Water
- Coarse Salt (to taste)
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Shape the Dough: Separate each biscuit from the can and roll each one into a small rope shape. Cut each rope into 4 equal pieces to create bite-sized portions.
- Prepare Baking Soda Bath: Fill a large pot halfway with water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, carefully stir in the baking soda until dissolved to create the alkaline bath necessary for pretzel texture.
- Boil Dough Bites: Working in small batches, drop the dough pieces into the boiling baking soda bath. Boil each side for 15 seconds to develop the characteristic pretzel crust. Use a slotted spoon to remove them carefully and transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
- Apply Egg Wash and Salt: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush this over each boiled dough bite to give them a shiny golden crust. Immediately sprinkle each with coarse salt to enhance flavor.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes, or until the pretzel bites are golden brown and cooked through.
Notes
- Make sure to not overcrowd the boiling bath to allow even cooking of the pretzel bites.
- The baking soda bath is essential for the traditional pretzel flavor and color; do not skip this step.
- You can add toppings like cinnamon sugar, sesame seeds, or everything bagel seasoning instead of coarse salt for variety.
- Serve warm with mustard, cheese sauce, or your favorite dip.
- For a crispier crust, bake for an additional 2-3 minutes but monitor to avoid burning.
